Windows Update
Microsoft has broken windows update. You might notice your machine acting extremely slow to the point of locking completely making the machine completely useless. If so you are on of the masses who are experiencing Microsoft's current bout of Jackassery.
If you find your machine is completely useless and rebooting doesn't give you a few minutes of "wiggle room" perform the following:
-Reboot
-The second you log in press Ctrl-Alt-Delete
-Select Task Manager
-In task Manager click on Processes, then the "Mem" field
This will sort processes by Memory usage, you want to sort from Greatest to Least
The top two processes are likely svchost.exe and wuauctl.exe
-Click wuauctl.exe and choose "End Task" you may be warned, say ok.
You should now be able to use your machine and be able to try a fix detailed below.
Fixing this issue can come in three possible steps:
1) The easy way
-Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Automatic updates -> Disable
-Reboot
-Right click My computer -> Properties -> Automatic updates -> Enable
-Reboot
This sometimes work, sometimes doesn't, I have yet to figure out a reason for this not to work.
2) The HotFix, if the above doesn't work:
- Visit this web page and download the hotfix for your operating system
HotFix 927891
-Apply the patch
-Reboot
3) Last resort
-Right Click My Computer -> Properties -Automatic Updates -> Disable
-Reboot
In this setup you'll turn off automatic updates and leave them off. When Microsoft gets its act together we'll apply further patches.

March 11th Day Light Savings Change
There are two important updates from Microsoft that need to be installed in order to ensure proper functioning during the change in Daylight Savings Time. They must be run in order. If you do not apply these patches before the 11th, nothing really bad will happen, but it will be easier if you can get to them before Sunday.1. Patch for Windows XP (Do not use if you have Windows 2000 or earlier) If you are using Windows XP. run the patch found at:
Patch-KB931836
(If the link does not work, just google "KB931836" and go to the page that describes it. About halfway down you will see "Download the Update for Windows XP package now." Click on that link to download.) If the patch is already installed, you will get an error telling you so. If it was not installed, a program will start that installs it for you. Just follow the instructions on screen.
2. TZMOVE tool for Outlook
If you use Outlook version 2000 or newer, you should then run this tool to check your appointments:
TZMove.exe
(If the link does not work, just google the word "TZMOVE" and you will get the site to download from.) Follow the instructions. When you get to the stage where it tells you how many appointments it found, there will be a button that allows you to see which appointments it thinks need to be moved. If the time in the right-column looks correct, leave the box checked. If it looks wrong, uncheck the box, and it will leave that appointment where it is.
That should cover you for the change, but we still recommend verifying important appointments for the next three weeks. Other people may not have done this, and their calendars may be off.
3. If you have a mobile device on which you use the calendar, you need to run an update on it as well. Things like Palm Pilots, Treo Mobile Phones, Blackberries and Windows Mobile devices all need updates. The following is a partial list of links. If you have a phone with calendaring, the best start is your phone provider.
